Raising Money For Kilbryde Hospice

For 2011 the Glenmarnock Wheelers will be undertaking an End to End non stop relay ride in memory of Michael Nelson. Michael was a truly inspirational character and talented bike rider who sadly died from cancer last year. We will be raising money for Kilbryde Hospice. Our target is £10,000 and we have a dedicated Just Giving Page. Please support us by making a donation at http://www.justgiving.com/Michael-Nelson-End2End-challenge .

Thankyou

About Michael Nelson

Michael was a dedicated teacher, husband, father and cyclist. He kept riding his bike right through his illness and when he lost the use of his arm he modified his bike so that he could ride one handed. A few months before he died he went to London to try out for the Para Olympic squad. During Michaels treatment he had to attend the Airdrie Hospice as this was the nearest to him. This commute made it harder for his young family to visit him. So the family felt that the best way to commemorate Michael was to raise money for the Kilbryde Hospice.

About  Kilbryde Hospice

Here is an introduction which has been taken from the Kilbryde Hospice website:

The driving force behind hospice, or palliative, care is the desire to transform the experience of dying. Still in the 21st century in the UK people die in avoidable pain and distress. In hospices multi-disciplinary teams strive to offer freedom from pain, dignity, peace and calm at the end of life.
Underpinning this care is a philosophy that takes as its starting point the affirmation of death as a natural part of life. Built on that bedrock are the values of respect, choice, empowerment, holistic care and compassion. Hospices care for the whole person, aiming to meet all needs – physical, emotional, social and spiritual. They care for the person who is dying and for those who love them, at home, in day care and in the hospice. Nearly half of all people admitted to a hospice return home again. The average length of stay is just 13 days. All care is free of charge.Within hospices you will find a range of services – pain control, symptom relief, skilled nursing care, counselling, complementary therapies, spiritual care, art, music, physiotherapy, reminiscence, beauty treatments and bereavement support.

Staff and volunteers work in multi-professional teams to provide care based on individual need and personal choice.

Palliative care is regarded by some as one of the greatest social innovations of the last hundred years.

We at Kilbryde Hospice Appeal strive to consolidate this by establishing a new palliative care centre for our community.
